Subscription Spending Calculator Methodology

This page explains how the Subscription Spending Calculator turns user-entered recurring charges into monthly and annual estimates, flags low-use services, and estimates potential savings from selected actions.

What this calculator estimates

The calculator estimates monthly subscription spending, annual subscription spending, subscription count, potential savings, amount over a target budget, category breakdowns, low-use items, annual renewals, forecasted costs, and a simple 12-month savings timeline.

How billing frequencies are normalized

Weekly charges are multiplied by 52 and divided by 12 for the monthly average. Monthly charges are used directly. Quarterly charges are multiplied by four for the annual cost and divided by 12 for the monthly average. Annual charges are kept in the annual total.

How annual subscriptions are handled

If annual renewals are included in the monthly average, the annual amount is divided by 12. If that setting is off, annual subscriptions stay in the annual total but are excluded from the displayed monthly average.

How low-use subscriptions are flagged

A subscription is flagged when it is marked rarely used or not used, when it is optional and above a small monthly threshold, or when the estimated cost per use is high based on the usage frequency entered.

How potential savings are calculated

Cancel actions count the full normalized cost as potential savings. Downgrade actions compare the current amount with the entered downgraded amount. Pause actions estimate temporary savings over the entered pause duration when pause savings are enabled. Review and keep actions are not counted as savings.

How category breakdowns are calculated

Included subscriptions are grouped by category. The calculator sums monthly and annual cost, counts the number of subscriptions in each category, and calculates each category's share of the total annual subscription cost.

How forecasted price increases are estimated

When price increases are enabled, the calculator compounds the total annual subscription cost by the entered annual increase percentage for each forecast year. If increases are disabled, the forecast multiplies the current annual total by the number of forecast years.

How savings goals are shown

Potential monthly savings are annualized to show how much could be redirected toward debt payoff or emergency savings if the selected cancel, pause, or downgrade actions actually happen. This is only a planning estimate.

What is not included

This calculator does not include actual bank transaction scanning, automatic cancellation, exact future price increases, free trial tracking unless entered manually, contract cancellation terms, refund rules, credit card account data, or professional financial, legal, tax, or cancellation advice.

This calculator uses user-entered subscriptions and simplified recurring-cost math. It does not scan bank accounts, cancel subscriptions, or verify billing terms.
